This is from October 2, 1967:

He must be 50 pounds lighter. And Pigpen is surprisingly the most normal looking person in that latter photo.

I know he got very sick in the '70s, and lost even more weight, but I didn't realize until now that he got so much thinner over the course of just a month or so back in '67.

Wow on the top photo. They're so YOUNG! I'm not so much thinking of the band members; we're used to seeing them young. But the others? Definitely puts things in perspective.

I agree that the other photo has to be later. How very nice to see that Phil changed his socks before the publicity photo. (Really, I'm picturing that photo shoot. "OK, guys, what we need here in that spot is someone who can take off his shoes.")

This is totally unrelated to the thread, but I couldn't resist.
This photo apparently surfaced a short time ago, and I don't know where it came from. I'm not at all sure it's authentic; but if it's a fake, someone at least did their homework. (Pigpen did indeed have a rifle collection.)
It's like an alternate-Pigpen reality where he starred in blaxploitation movies...

This photo has been around since the 70s. When I first saw the band in 1967, Pig was not all that rolly polly--just greasy.

Oh yeah, I can verify that I've seen this shot before, and others like it, with assault weapons, special lady friends of color, etc., etc., etc.

What a great thread! Not only did we get the hilarious "Mickey looks like a Gay Russian Matador" but we get a pic of Pigpen doing a community theater production of Shaft.

I think that is Pigpen's girlfriend Veronica.

I don't remember exactly where but I've seen this before in the 70s.

It might have been a poster at one time, but I do know it's been around in the past.

Is that at mickeys ranch ?

Mickey's Ranch! I'd love to try it! Newman's does nothing for me and I don't eat things which come from Hidden Valleys.

Bust stress?

A lot is made of Pigpen's weight loss in the '70s, but actually '67/68 is when he really shed the pounds - from being the roly-poly heavyweight in '66 to an almost dapper figure in '69... For sure there was no diet involved, either! Perhaps health issues were striking earlier than people were aware.

(Actually, I thought Kreutzmann was always the most normal-looking guy in those days...)

Hah, I mean the timing would make sense, but somehow I can't imagine Pig being that effected by the bust. Especially since he was the only band member who never willingly ingested illegal substances.

I'm assuming it was health related, but I find it strange that I've never heard about any health issues with him in late '67.

I always felt Bill (in those days, with that haircut and smile), looked like he should be in the show Full House. I think he'd fit right in above Bob Saget's head. He's got the creepy uncle look, but also more Bill Murray looking at times, and then eventually went the mustache route.

That second shot is fucking weird. Bobby looks like a high school chick without any makeup on and Mickey looks like a Gay Russian Matador or some shit - and Billy is rockin' that Full House Saget style mullet too. Creepy shit.

I really dont think these pics were only a month apart.

LMAO @ gay Russian matador.

Yea Billy had the Full House look down pat years before Saget and gang became famous. Damn, just realized that Bill's even got the signature Full House collared shirt, and probably has his arm around Pigpen like John Stamos has his around the young girl next to him in that picture

I don't see why the dates wouldn't be accurate though. Why the skepticism partner?

It's also rather difficult to tell what Pigpen's weight is in that second photo since most of his body is not visible.

Look at his face though. It is considerably thinner. Also, if you look through a lot of pics of '67 chronologically, you will notice that he does get thinner throughout the year, but it seems during October he lost the bulk of his weight.

I'm asking the expert - are these shots accurately dated? Even Phil's hair seems different. Way longer in the second shot. Or is that not Phil sitting next to Bobby in the first? And why are all these people smoking? :)

The pictures are from Dead.net. Check them out for yourself. No trickery involved:

And that's not Phil in the 1st shot. Pretty sure.

This photo is dated 9/30/67, though I think it was taken immediately after the bust, anyway it gives a little more context on what the band looked like in Oct '67:

first photo is dated correctly: drug bust 1967-10-02, from left to right Weir, Bob Matthews, Rock Scully, Sue Swanson, PigPen, Vee, unknown, Danny Rifkin
second photo is about half a year later: very likely May 1968 New York, a very beautiful color photo of Garcia w/exactly these sideburns and this shirt and PigPen w/this hat and this shirt was on the cover of Relix Vol.10 No.1 - and of course both are smokin'!

compare w/photos of 1968-05-03 and the film of Columbia Revolt!
After that, Garcia grew a full beard up to 1968-08 and by 1968-09 has cut his long hair.
Of course, PigPen lost mucho pounds between 1967-11 and 1968-12.

The one on the right at the end of the bench is Danny Rifkin.

we should have a trivial work-out on how the guys grew their beards and hair... would date a lot of pictures
